Rug Art discoveries at Western!

Tanya Graham's painterly version of 'Birches'

it was lovely meeting Tanya Graham, a Canadian Rug Hooker that is also a Painter. Tanya presented an interesting ‘Show & Tell’ where she changed a pattern in a simple but powerful way. Her husband stayed in a nearby campground with their dog, Rufus, while she stayed with us at the UO dorm. They are planning a traveling holiday in the weeks after Western. She had a bottle opener, wine and plastic wine glasses to share, a regular party gal and everyone’s friend!

Western has new directors this year; Michele Wise and Sharon Saknit. It is fun to see them taking over and giving the workshop a new style and feel. Michele is a very creative fiber artist and it’s always interesting to see her contributions to the Rug Show. Her Mexican diary has everyone thinking about making similar quick landscape studies in small 5×9″ rugs.

'Original' by Chris Ward

the Trainee group was talented and practiced, contributing a positive atmosphere to our entire workshop week. there were 2 rocking chairs in the Rug show, this one showcases a self-portrait by Trainee, Chris Ward.

  1. I see youève met Tanya Graham. I am one of her biggest fans. She is so smart and funny. She used to belong to Georgetown Rug Hooking Guild when I first joined. She came to Georgetown this spring and gave a talk about dying with natural dyes.
